Carnelian is one of the oldest gemstones in history. The Egyptians carried carnelian with them as a source of vitality and energy. It was placed in tombs for life after death. Its a variety of the chalcedony family. Carnelians name came from the Latin corneolus, meaning "cherry". The orange to dark red carnelian gets its color from the presence of iron in the stone.
